Roman Shade Styles  - Video Tutorials & Instructions

Picture
We are pleased to provide video tutorials and instructions to assist you in the fabrication of your shades. Please start with the basic Flat Roman shade and work you way through the more advanced fabrication styles and features. We will support your fabrication process when you follow the steps. If you vary the steps and use other fabrication methods, you may have different results and we may or may not be able to help you if you have a problems with your shades.

For each style, we offer a size that can be made and used as a sample shade to use with clients or test it out yourself before moving on to more expensive fabrics or larger sized shades. Each video and each step is organized so that you can get to a finished shade with the best outcome. Please watch the series completely before jumping into your shade. Do all the planning and calculations on paper ahead of cutting out fabric so that you know how the shade will fold.

Make Your Own Flat Roman Shade - 12 STEPS

Start here on your path to making beautiful Roman shades using the Widget kits. You can change the dimensions to match the window and shade size you need to make. This shade fabrication will get you familiar with the components needed to build a successful shade. If you follow along with our dimensions you will have a nice "hand sample" to use for future demonstrations.

The hem grip is on the very bottom of the shade but you may want to do a Concealed Hem instead. Follow those directions as shown in the "Single Thread" playlist. You need to make this decision prior to cutting out your fabric, so plan first on paper!

Make Your Own Relaxed Roman Shade - 9 STEPS

There are several ways to make a Relaxed Roman shade. We will talk about the 2 different cutting silhouettes and different fabrication methods. The tutorial includes one path and includes a 1/2" flat trim, flannel interlining, and lining. We talk about the options for fabricating an unlined Relaxed Roman shade as we fabricate to other specifications.

Make Your Own Hobbled Shade - 15 STEPS

This shade has fixed soft folds and a longer stack when the shade is in the full upright position. Make a sample shade in this style and it will quickly become your new favorite. It uses twice the amount of fabric due to the hobbled folds so plan ahead of time if you are making this style, so that you have enough fabric. We feel our fabrication steps walk you through a successful shade style that is often overlooked because it looks complicated. Following each step will ensure that you have a beautiful shade when you are finished.

Optional step #8 in this series includes adding vertical banding stripes down the shade length. This feature can be added to other shade styles. Structure is also added to this shade in step #5 by pressing Buckram strips to the lining instead of using ribs.

Make Your Own Top Down/Bottom Up Roman Shade - 8 STEPS

This is an "advanced" fabrication style shade. You should be comfortable with making a Flat Roman shade using the Widget kit before attempting to make this shade. This shade provides both the standard hem being 'bottom up' and the shade releasing from the mount board so the "top down' feature opens the shade for visibility at the top of the shade, as well.

This shade requires a valance and we show how to do a return on the valance in step #7, which is a feature that can be added to an outside mounted shade of another style. Ribs are added to this shade in step #3 so that you can have a longer span between lift cords, a feature that can be added to another shade style.

Print the diagram and use it for reference to tie off your cord at the brass rings. No other fastening components will be supported. They often cause the shade to become uneven and will cause more problems in the future. Use only the products provided in the kit.
